My
most often asked question: "what's your
favourite whisky?"
The
answer is simple; I don't have a single favourite whisky. Or at
least not for day-to-day drinking. I like all styles of whisky
and will usually select one that suits my mood at the time, or
just takes my fancy at that given moment.
I have
been very lucky to be able to savour some excellent drams in
recent years and as a result, I do have a list of what I
consider to be my personal 'Top 10', which is based upon their
excellent quality and also the
impression these whiskies left on me. But as you will see, many
of these are rather special and sometimes unique, so they can be
extremely difficult and sometimes impossible to find.
1.
Dalmore 40y Cask Strength
Never bottled at CS but I was
lucky to attend a Masterclass with Richard Paterson where this
was offered before being reduced for bottling (See
also '7' below)
2.
Ardbeg Very Old, Guaranteed 30y
I have tasted some
marvellous Ardbegs, but for me, this is the finest! Smooth,
succulent Summer fruits. A true fantasy in a glass.
3.
Bowmore 1966, 40y
Stunning Bowmore, full of surprises.
4.
Ardbeg Provenance, 1974-1997 A true great.
5.
Glen Keith, 1967, 21y Smooth, palatable luxury
6.
Talisker 1955, 38y, G&M
Intense, rich, smooth power
7.
Dalmore 40y, 40%
Sublime Christmas pudding, plus much more.
8.
Isle of Jura, 33y
A very rare
treat.
9.
Millburn, 1969, 36y, Old Malt Cask
A melody of
fresh flavours, wonderful harmony.
10.
The cask of Yamazaki, heavily peated, 1998-'07
Uncompromising power
Congratulations to these ten exemplary whiskies, they are all
worthy 'winners' and selection did cause some dilemma,
especially in the case of two whiskies which almost made the
list, but unfortunately just missed out. So, I would like to add
just two more which I consider to be more than worthy of a
mention and would sit at positions 11 & 12;
Ardbeg Kildalton
& Douglas Laing's
Tactical,
1980-25y
